Cancelled: The UN Commission on the Status of Women 64th Meeting

March 9, 2020 @ 8:00 am March 20, 2020 @ 5:00 pm EDT

The US End FGM/C  is very concerned about COVID-19 and is closely following updates and recommendations, as are our members, partners, and supporters.

Like many of our members and partners, we were looking forward to attending and representing our members at the United Nations 64th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW64)  that was slated to take place in New York, March 9th-20th. This years’ CSW session also marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 1995 (Beijing 25+), making it a premier platform to engage the global community and advance FGM/C prevention efforts.
Due to the current threat posed by the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and as per recommendations by the UN Secretary-General, the UN Commission on the Status of Women released a statement yesterday, March 2nd, detailing the following amendments to the CSW64 Session:

  • The Commission will convene on 9 March, at 10.00 a.m. (EST), for a procedural meeting. The meeting will include opening statements, followed by the adoption of the draft Political Declaration and action on any other draft resolutions. The session will then suspend until further notification
  • No general debate will take place
  • All side events planned by Member States and the UN system in conjunction with CSW64 will be cancelled.

The NGO Committee on the Status of Women, New York (NGO CSW/NY) has also moved to cancel all NGO CSW64 Forum events.

Consequently, all CSW64 parallel sessions organized by the US End FGM/C Network and our partners  have been cancelled, including:

  • “Partnerships to Accelerate Global Action to End FGM/C” (hosted by the Global Platform for Action) to End FGM/C scheduled for March 12th  6:15pm-7:45pm
  • “Pushing for Progress on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting in the U.S.” scheduled for March 16th, at 6:15pm-7:45pm
  • “Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A Call For a Global Response”  Report launch with Equality Now and End FGM EU (updates coming soon)

The US End FGM Network recognizes the impact that this has on the ability of our members to engage with the global community, share their experiences, and inform conversations and decisions around CSW.  We will continue to update our members as the situation develops. Members and individuals needing help with hotel and/or airline reimbursements can find a formal letter from NGO CSW/NY here.
In order to facilitate coordination and connection between members that were planning to be active around CSW64, we are also asking our members and partners to update us on your evolving plans, as soon as possible.

We also invite our supporters who have not done so already to become members of the Network in order to receive timely updates and information.
