Functional literacy as an opportunity for Women’s Empowerment

Poverty of women is often caused through lack of education, unemployment, jobs with low income and dependency on family members. This parallel event will discuss how to foster women in developing countries so that they can fetch for themselves and how to collaborate with UNESCO to support functional literacy in those places where women need it. Harmful traditional practices consist of FGM, early and forced marriage, wife battery, widow rites etc. Women with vocational training can protect themselves, their children and their rights. Women who are able to read and write know their rights and will not be trafficked by traffickers.

In this event, experts will explore the situation of women who do not read and write and the possibilities of functional literacy and vocational training for affected women in developing countries.
Together with the audience there will be a discussion and exchange of ideas.
